Who are we?
Originally, the group was created in 2012 by Ground Works South as a conservation group, maintaining the Hermitage Open Space in Leigh Park. When their contract/funding came to an end in 2015, the original group was terminated. It was later rebooted, by Dee Tupper and a few of her neighbours. The group then became 'Friends of the Hermitage Stream' and now the group is thriving.
What do we do?
We do a whole range of jobs at three locations, such as, litter picking, trimming back trees and bushes, planting trees, clearing the stream and Himalayan Balsam removal in the summer.
We occasionally volunteer with other groups in different locations, such as 'Southdowns National Park'.
The photos to the side show volunteers removing bracken at the National Park.
Who can join?
Simple answer, anyone and everyone, as long as you're 18 or over, enthusiastic, honest, a hard worker and ready for a laugh a minute. If you'd like to join, please see the 'Contact Details' section for more details.
Where do you volunteer?
We volunteer in three different places around Leigh Park. The Hermitage Open Space which is located in Purbrook Way, Bushy Lease in Park House Farm Way and Clares Cops in St Clares Avenue. We also occasionally volunteer at local schools.
Events
We hold a couple of events every year at the Hermitage Stream, an Easter Event and a Summer Event.
We do this to raise money to help the volunteers continue the work they do at the stream.
At Christmas time our volunteers help out at the Christmas grotto, which is created by and run 'Leigh Park Christmas Grotto.' All events are jam packed family filled fun.
FOTHS Meetings
As a voluntary group, we need to have meetings so we can discuss future events, future sessions and anything else regarding updates from different organisations in the area that are affiliated with the group. These meetings are held in the Community Center in Dunsbury Way on the first Thursday of every month at 19:00.
